چکیده

We read with interest the article by Mansour et al. (1) published entitled "Echocardiographic predictors of atrial fibrillation after mitral valve replacement." in Anatol J Cardiol 2017;17:3346. As expected, postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is more likely to occur in patients with mitral valve disease when the preoperative left atrial diameter increases. However, there is a particular aspect that draws our attention when both groups are evaluated in the study of Mansour et al. (1). That aspect is the body mass index (BMI) difference that can affect the left atriums of patients independent of valve pathologies. BMI of patients who develop POAF in particular is higher than that of patients in the other group. Many studies show that enlargement in the diameter of the left atrium occurs as the weight increases (2–5). In some studies, obesity alone is a risk factor for AF (5). In a study of the effects of the changes in the left atrium on POAF in particular, we believe that a parameter (BMI) that affects the left atrial diameter independently of the valve pathology should be similar between the two groups. We are convinced that learn the authors’ ideas on this subject will add value to their study.

Incidence of Atrial Fibrillation after Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery and Its Risk Factors in Shiraz, Iran during 2017-18

Background and Objectives: Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common disorientations after coronary artery bypass graft surgery and can affect the chance of survival in the first year after surgery. The present study aimed to determine the incidence of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass graft surgery and its risk factors.   Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on...

Association between red cell distribution width and P-wave dispersion in patients with atrial tachyarrhythmia.

Although red cell distribution width (RDW) and P-wave dispersion (Pwd) are strong independent predictors of atrial tachyarrhythmia (ATa), the association between these two factors in the occurrence of ATA has hitherto not been reported. We retrospectively analyzed the cases of ATa patients who underwent Holter monitoring at our hospital from October 2013 to August 2014. Clinical data including ...

Effect of blood gases and acid-base disturbances on the pulmonary circulation.

A DISCUSSION OF THE HEMODYNAMICS of any circulation, and that of the pulmonary circulation in particular, must be concerned with three factors: (1) the flow through the circulation, which in the case of the lung is also the cardiac output; (2) the resistance to flow through the vas-cular bed, which is primarily a function of the number and diameter of resistance vessels , and to a lesser degree...

A Semi-Automated Algorithm for Segmentation of the Left Atrial Appendage Landing Zone: Application in Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Procedures

Background: Mechanical occlusion of the Left atrial appendage (LAA) using a purpose-built device has emerged as an effective prophylactic treatment in patients with atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke and a contraindication for anticoagulation. A crucial step in procedural planning is the choice of the device size. This is currently based on the manual analysis of the “Device Landing Zone” fr...

The Left Atrium in Hypertension: a Symbol of Mortality and Morbidity?

9 The importance of the left atrium in cardiac pathophysiology is perhaps a little undervalued. Indeed, left atrial size and/or function has been implicated in a number of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disorders as being either causal or as an indirect marker(s) of disease [1]. For example, the Framingham study reported that left atrial enlargement was a significant predictor of stroke in ...
